7-Zip сжимает файлы алгоритмом LZMA, который гораздо совершеннее алгоритма архиватора WinRar. В алгоритме сжатия данных LZMA реализована поддержка технологий multi- и hyper-threading, что также дает программе плюс на платформах с мощными процессорами в сравнении с конкурентами.
В 7-Zip имеется возможность создания архивов, которые защищены паролем (для расшифровки пароля из 17 символов понадобится от 40 до 100 лет), шифровать названия файлов и конечно же создавать самораспаковывающиеся SFX-архивы. При шифровании используется 256-битный криптографический алгоритм AES, который является одним из лучших алгоритмов шифрования в настоящее время.
В первую очередь, данный архиватор ценен своим собственным форматом 7z. Считается, что данный формат имеет наивысшую степень сжатия и отлично подходит для архивации больших объемов информации (например, особо крупных программ или игр). Также поддерживаются форматы: ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, LZH, CHM, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM и DEB. Стоит обратить внимание на нередкие ситуации, в коих степень сжатия форматов ZIP и GZIP в этой программе на порядок выше, чем у конкурентов.
7-Zip полностью бесплатен, а так как это нечастое явление среди программ данного рода, то этот факт является еще одним хорошим аргументом в его пользу.
